'83 Alumna Named Teacher of the Week

STILLMAN VALLEY (WREX) - A teacher's care and concern for her students doesn't just end when school lets out. Our "Teacher of the Week" made sure a little preschool student struggling with health issues didn't miss out.

4-year-old Alaina Haas feels right at home in her classroom at Valley Covenant Church in Stillman Valley.  This preschooler got a late jump on the school year because she was battling leukemia. But Alaina's teacher Mrs. Jill Huber came up with a way to make her feel like part of the class even in the hospital.  Lessons were done via webcam.

Mrs. Huber states, "We wanted her to know who the kids were in class. We even had her do our jobs on the webcam when she was in the hospital she was the weather girl. We just wanted her to feel a part of us."

Alaina wasn't healthy enough to come to school until October.  In order to make sure Alaina doesn't get any of the many germs kids carry around, Mrs. Huber constantly sanitizes and even has stuff for Alaina's hands only.

Alaina's mom Natalie Haas states, "She has her own set of supplies she uses so she doesn't get any germs they really do a good job of keeping it safe for her. I just think she went above and beyond especially for preschool."

Mrs. Huber says, "I didn't expect anything special we just did it because we love Alaina and we wanted her to come back and be with us at school. She's just very special to all of us and that's what we do here we love our kids."

And the school loves "Pajama Day." 13 News happened to surprise Mrs. Huber wearing her favorite comfy clothes, which were penguin pajamas. Just another reason why our "Teacher of the Week" gets such praise.

Mrs. Huber's been teaching for 20 years. She's got a double role at the preschool.  She also serves as the director.
